Youth, experience fuels IT debate

There appears to be a heated debate regarding which traits are most desirable in the field of information technology. ZDNet recently released a poll measuring whether youth or experience is preferred among IT professionals.
The poll stems from a recent TechRepublic article by Jack Wallen, which stated young workers provide their employers with valuable skills and a fresh attitude - both critical components of a successful IT worker. However, Toni Bowers, of the same publication, said experience is the top trait to have in the field.
According to the debate, younger workers are able to work longer hours, request lower pay and are more likely to have diverse skill-sets. According to the poll, though, the most desirable trait is experience, with 85 percent of respondents naming it.
“Meanwhile, older workers are often preferred because they know how to get things done, have usually been through multiple platform transitions and can use their experience to efficiently complete projects without wasting as much effort or resources,” wrote ZDNet’s Jason Hiner.
Whatever the case may be for the most desirable trait for an IT worker, companies are expected to spend more on hiring and technology upgrades during the year. According to a report by Gartner, worldwide IT spending is expected to reach $3.6 trillion in 2011.
