Women gather to promote more jobs in the technology field

Participants recently gathered in Austin, Texas, for a reception promoting women in the technology fields.
According to CNN, women remain underrepresented in technology jobs. In 2009, a U.S. Department of Labor report found that out of the top 20 jobs for women, none were in the tech field. Other statistics included in the article are by the National Center for Women & Information Technology, which revealed only 3 percent of CEOs for Fortune 500 companies were women in 2009.
One organization in Austin is trying to change this outlook. Girl Start provides science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education for women.
"Less than 12 percent of STEM jobs in America are filled by women,” Tamara Hudgins, executive director at Girl Start, told the news provider. “So for us, making sure that more girls feel that they have access to STEM jobs is critical. Having more women in the field is important for innovation."
Last month, the CompTIA Educational Foundation established the Women IT council to help women achieve careers in the IT field.
