Windows still tops server operating systems, study finds

A recent study from Massachusetts-based tech research firm IDC indicates that the most popular server operating systems are made by Microsoft, followed by Linux and trailed - in a distant third place - by Unix.

Hardware-wise, IBM led the pack. IDC group vice president Matt Eastwood said that, although the majority of 2009 was a difficult time for the server industry, innovation and optimism for 2010 helped to push the fourth quarter from decline to profitability.

ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley reports that "Windows Server and SQL Server are the biggest bottom-line contributors to Microsoft's Server and Tools business. It will still be another few years before Microsoft's investments in cloud computing begin kicking in and contributing dollars to Redmond's coffers, officials have conceded."

IT professionals whose training was primarily in SQL Server and other Microsoft products will find that knowledge serving them well in the current IT environment, as the statistics from IDC bear out. For those who aren't as familiar with those products, SQL Server training might be an attractive option.
