Technology needed for aging water infrastructure, says report

According to a report by Lux Research, the worldwide water infrastructure is aging and hinges on technology for improvements.
The market for water technology is pushing nearly $20 billion a year and is increasing 10 percent each year. The area leading to the increased market is consumer water bills, which continue to grow out of control, the report stated. This problem is prompting government officials to seek cost-effective solutions in order to maintain pipe networks.
The areas most desperately in need of an overhaul are pipe repair and monitoring technologies, which are trailing behind pipe monitoring, due to advancements in information technology.
“Outdated water infrastructure and record high government deficits are both fueling demand for low-cost inspection and repair solutions - namely software and sensor technologies that can provide a snapshot of a utility’s entire infrastructure,” said Brent Giles, a Lux Research senior analyst and the report’s lead author.
Another field is hinging on the development of technology. According to a report by Newsday, as hospitals transition toward digital medical records, IT workers are needed to help develop the systems for such a move.
