Tech blogger: SharePoint and other network apps require smart networks

3/30/2010 1:30 PM

Enterprise IT networks need to be able to understand certain basic information about the applications that are running on them, according to tech expert Lori MacVittie of Dev Central.

MacVittie writes that networks cannot be described as app-aware "unless it responds to the application and its real-time behavior and status. Right now. That means the 'network,' such as it is, needs to be fluent in not only the transport and application-layer protocols, but in the behavior of that application under a variety of network and data center conditions."

IT professionals working on these networks, according to MacVittie, must ensure that the frameworks are able to adapt themselves to the needs of any application they are expected to run "at any given time," and that resource scalability and flexibility are paramount concerns.

While additional training could be required for some IT professionals whose enterprises are moving toward a smart network model, the net gain in productivity from increased application uptime and performance should far outweigh any short-term losses in work hours or retraining.
