Microsoft recently released a second service pack for SQL Server 2008 and integration with SharePoint 2010 was one of the main changes.

Service Pack 2 updates integration of reporting services with SharePoint. According to the official SQL blog, "SQL Server 2008 SP2 also provides a new add-in to support the integration of SQL Server 2008 R2 report servers with SharePoint 2007 products. This now enables SharePoint Server 2007 to be used with SQL Server 2008 R2 Report Server."

Other updates in Service Pack 2 include support for up to 15,000 partitions in tables and indexes. Originally, SQL Server 2008 only supported 1,000 partitions, which make large tables more manageable and scalable, according to Network World. The SP2 will also allow users to support the data-tier application operations that are used in SQL Server 2008 R2.

Service Pack 2 was released 18 months after Microsoft debuted Service Pack 1.

Results from an InformationWeek Analytics survey of information technology professionals found Microsoft's SQL Server business intelligence to be the most popular. Thirty-five percent of 755 respondents said their company's primary operational database platform is from Microsoft. Experts believe the results show SQL Server is overtaking Oracle as a primary database.
