SQL Server among top database frameworks in enterprise IT, survey says

More than nine in 10 enterprise IT professionals use Microsoft's SQL Server framework as a part of their database systems, according to the results of [a] survey released this month by the Independent Oracle User's Group.

The IOUG, in discussing the survey results, said that "more than 90 percent say they run databases other than Oracle, and in most cases, these are Microsoft SQL Server. Another 44 percent of this group also say they have instances of MySQL onsite. There is some sharing of data that takes place between these environments, but as respondents report, this is not deep integration."

The survey also found that virtualization and cloud computing were among the hottest trends in enterprise IT recently, although adoption of the technology has not yet become universal. Some traditionally constructed systems are still in use.

This widespread heterogeneity in database software implies that IT professionals must be skilled in the use of many such programs, and should be sure to invest in additional IT training if necessary to keep themselves employable.
