Report: SharePoint 2010 mobile access will be vastly improved

The bulky, 1990s-style interface will be among the first things changed for Microsoft's SharePoint 2010 mobile feature, according to a report at CMSWire.

The report says that "early efforts have been very limited, but recently, we have seen the arrival of a beta of SharePoint Workspace Mobile for Windows Mobile 6.5. This offers shared documents, document viewers, configurable alerts, filtering and mobile shortcuts. Pages can easily be configured for mobile (using the ?mobile=1 tag) while photos can be uploaded and status updates entered."

According to the report, though, the real changes will be seen not with the April release of SharePoint 2010, but with the release - later this year - of Windows Phone 7, which will create a coherent Windows mobile business framework for Microsoft-based IT departments to implement.

The greater mobile integration in SharePoint 2010 is one of several signs that smartphones are beginning to take a more central role in the world of enterprise IT. Studies have shown adoption rates for business smartphones skyrocketing in recent months.
