Report: Revenue-generating positions are first to be filled

As companies are refocusing their efforts on generating revenue after two years of cutting costs, budgets and staffs, the first positions to be filled will be the ones that can drive profits, according to a new survey from CareerBuilder.com. It appears the IT department could be among the first to benefit.
The job posting website polled 2,400 hiring managers and human-resource professionals in November and December to determine how they will hire in 2011.
Among respondents that said their company figures to add more full-time, permanent workers this year, IT was among the top areas cited, according to the report.
Job seekers may also find positions as temporary or contract IT employees, the report suggests. Thirty-four percent of hiring managers will hire contract or temporary workers in 2011, which is up from 30 percent last year and 28 percent the year before.
In November, CareerBuilder reported that IT job listings were up 39 percent on the site compared to the same time in 2009. By comparison, human resource listings have increased 33 percent and manufacturing opportunities are up 27 percent. Entry-level listings are up 46 percent from a year ago, while managerial listings have risen 27 percent.
