Report: Microsoft to release new service pack for SQL Server 2005

Computing giant Microsoft says that it will produce a fourth service pack for its SQL Server 2005 software, a move that SQL Server Magazine's Brian Reinholz says is something that IT professionals who work with the system have been crying out for.

According to Reinholz, SP4 will come out sometime in the fourth quarter of this year, well after Microsoft releases the next full version of the software, 2008 R2. That product is set for a May release.

However, Reinholz writes, some companies that have not yet updated to SQL Server 2008 due to compatibility or transition issues could be well-advised to wait for the service pack for their older version, rather than attempting to tackle a labor-intensive transition to the newer product.

Experts say that the coming release of SQL Server 2008 R2 should provide a strong impetus for IT professionals unfamiliar with Microsoft's product to avail themselves of SQL Server training, which should make them more attractive to potential employers and more valuable to their current ones.
