Report: Enhanced training key to improved federal IT
10/28/2010 2:00 AM
As part of its 33-step action plan recently presented to the Obama administration, the TechAmerica Foundation recommends enhancing the IT workforce through improved training as a way of improving federal information technology acquisitions and management.
According to TechAmerica, improved education for IT professionals is key to achieving the main goal of the report. This will require the government to create a federal career path for IT professionals that emphasizes financial and career advancement incentives, according to the report.
A training program, certification and job classifications for federal IT professionals could be worked out between the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management.
"This could be established through a program management leadership academy that is accompanied by programs such as mentoring, joint training with industry, rotational assignments and business simulations," according to the report.
The federal government is continuously exploring methods for improving its IT infrastructure. Earlier this year, U.S. Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra announced the Federal Data Center Consolidation project to streamline federal IT and cut costs.
