New Microsoft software development kit should help integrate PHP and BI

Microsoft announced late last week in a blog post that its new SDK could offer IT professionals powerful new options for linkages between web applications and business intelligence software.

Microsoft senior program manager Claudio Caldato wrote that "this SDK enables PHP applications to simply utilize SQL Server Reporting Services, Microsoft's Reporting and Business Intelligence solution. Best of all, these scenarios can be done using the free (as in 'free beer'!) SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services edition."

The new functionality should greatly simplify moves to adopt more cloud-based systems, according to Paul Krill at InfoWorld, who said that "the API offers methods to perform operations including listing reports within a PHP application, providing custom parameters from a PHP Web form and managing and rendering reports within a PHP application."

While extensive IT training is still a necessity for the creation of modern business IT systems, intuitive new frameworks like the one released by Microsoft should make the transition easier, and allow end-users more flexibility and simplicity in the use of their programs.
