New IBM server line cuts costs for SQL licensing

While more attention has been paid to the scalable memory features of the new IBM eX5 server, IT professionals note that the device will also slice SQL Server license fees by as much as 50 percent.
Computer Weekly reports that "the eX5 decouples memory from its processor using a technology dubbed Max 5, which IBM said eliminated the need to buy another server to support workloads that are increasingly memory-intensive. The company said the systems offer six times the memory scalability commonly available today, helping to flatten the ever-rising cost of operating industry-standard datacenters."
However, ZDNet blogger Manek says that companies must prepare their systems for the increased data load that all the new servers can cause. "Now all you need to do is figure out how you'll handle all the additional I/O those memory-hungry databases will generate" he warns in writing a generally positive review of the new eX5.
Experts say that the new hardware shouldn't require a great deal of additional instruction to use, but a basic level of SQL server training is still a good idea.
