New CPU frameworks working well with Windows Server 2008 R2

Microsoft announced this week that new high-end server CPUs from Advanced Micro Devices could provide significant performance upgrades over previously available technology.

The AMD Opteron 6000 series boasts "the industry's only 8- and 12-core server processors … [providing] an 88 percent increase in integer performance and a 119 percent increase in floating point performance," the company said.

Microsoft, for its part, said that the new processors would carry advantages for users of a number of Microsoft products, including SQL Server and Windows Server. Virtualization would also be easier with the Opteron 6000 series, Microsoft said.

Tech news site Softpedia pointed out that improved scalability could provide for better energy efficiency by shutting down processors that are not needed to complete some tasks. Additionally, each individual processing core will be able to intelligently balance its workloads, Softpedia said.

New implementations of hardware are unlikely to make a great deal of SQL Server training necessary, although the improved hardware performance could free up IT professionals to develop new ways of using existing systems.
