New 12-core AMD processor could be a boon to enterprise IT departments

IT professionals could have the option to reduce the physical size of their data centers without a loss in capacity with the advent of AMD's new 12-core server processor.

Computerworld reports that "users will look at the price, performance and energy use of the chip and compare it with Intel's x86 chip upgrades, but other reasons for moving to a 12-core chip will be the impact on overall data center space needs and software licensing costs. The chip will be sold in an eight-core version."

Experts say that the implementation of such a device should be relatively simple for IT professionals with more advanced knowledge, such as SQL Server training, and several businesses told Computerworld they were definitely planning to use AMD's new processors to help deal with server load.

Intel debuted an outsized version of this idea, showing off a 48-core "cloud computer on a chip" device late last year, but that processor is more a proof of concept and test bed than it is a commercial product, experts say.
