Multiple new releases driving Microsoft sales numbers higher

Tech giant Microsoft announced on Thursday that its most recent sales quarter had seen record revenues of $14.5 billion, a 6 percent gain over the company's performance in the same period last year.

Microsoft CFO Peter Klein said that "Windows 7 continues to be a growth engine, but we also saw strong growth in other areas like Bing search, Xbox LIVE and our emerging cloud services. Our record third-quarter revenue along with continued rigor on cost management resulted in exceptional EPS growth."

A raft of new releases in recent months - including new software for SharePoint developers and other IT professionals - may have helped the company's sales numbers hit new peaks, but the continued success of Windows 7 was the unquestioned cornerstone. The company says that fully 10 percent of PCs around the world already use the latest version of its flagship operating system.

Kevin Turner, Microsoft's COO, said that "business customers are beginning to refresh their desktops and the momentum of Windows 7 continues to be strong," adding that the company's cloud services were also doing well.
