Information technology job growth continued to show strength during January.
The Department of Labor released employment numbers and 11,800 IT-related jobs were gained in January, according to eWeek.com. This represents the eight straight month of positive job growth in labor segments and federal employment data.
In the past 12 months, five bellweather IT job segments have experienced a net gain of 74,200 jobs, including management and technical consulting services, computer systems design and related services segments.
The computer products industry added more than 800 jobs in January, and the electronic products industry added more than 700 jobs. Over the past year, the two industries added a total of 6,500 and 3,900 jobs, respectively.
“The job of each one of these entities is to determine how to make the best use of information technology for producing revenues and profitability, building market share, ensuring satisfied customers, controlling costs, innovating solutions and generally to stay competitive in their industries,” said CEO of IT analyst firm David Foote.
The continued growth of IT jobs is great news, especially considering companies are cutting fewer jobs. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, employers reported roughly 500,000 job cuts in 2010 compared to 2009, when 1.2 million were cut.
