Microsoft delays shipment of new SQL Server version

Computing giant Microsoft announced Friday that its SQL Server 2008 R2 software would not be available to the public until well after mid-2010. The company had previously said that the product would be released in the first half of the year.

According to a blog post on Microsoft's Technet, "although our intent was to deliver SQL Server 2008 R2 Parallel Data Warehouse in the first half of 2010, we are still gathering customer feedback and working to ensure the high quality release our customers expect. Based on feedback from the customer Technology Adoption Program, we expect to announce more specific release timing, final configurations and pricing for our hardware partners in early summer (northern hemisphere)."

The company also announced, though, that it had shipped a new technology preview of the product at the same time, allowing Microsoft's community partners to get a leg up on the competition. The early distribution means that some companies will be able to begin SQL Server training far quicker than those that must wait for the new product's full release.
