Microsoft: Further details of private cloud services will come out at upcoming event

Software giant Microsoft announced in a post on its MSDN blog late last week that it would roll out more information about its evolving cloud computing framework at an event to be held May 20.

IT professionals will be interested to learn that the framework will combine several of Microsoft's applications - including the "Velocity" caching technology and "Dublin" app server, according to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley - into a unified whole, known as AppFabric.

Foley writes that "while there was confusion last year as to whether Microsoft would offer some kind of Windows Azure variant for enterprises to host in their own datacenters, that isn't happening. The Windows Server and Azure teams have been sharing code and knowledge," which means that the company's unification of its server frameworks will continue.

Microsoft said that the event will be free to attend and open to all, requiring no pre-registration since it is to be held entirely in the virtual space, highlighting the company's new focus on cloud-based computing and services.
