Lack of IT literacy benefits those already in field

An IT expert contends the small number of people taking up IT training may actually be a good thing for knowledgeable professionals already in the field.

While some may be concerned the lack of students studying IT will cause the industry to face a skills shortage in the next five or 10 years, Gerry McLaughlin of ITContractor.com disagrees. McLaughlin said skilled and knowledgeable IT professionals' jobs are safe and will increase in importance.

"IT will prove to be a lucrative and much safer profession over the next five to 10 years," he said recently. "The information age has arrived and those working in IT are in the vanguard of it."

But while workers may be in short supply, IT jobs won't be. The U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics estimates IT jobs are expected to increase by 17 percent by the year 2018. A recent report in the Washington Post signaled the growth could be more drastic for more specialized IT sectors.
