Improved SQL Server training should provide for faster query speeds, expert says

Expert techniques for programming SQL Server can help implementations of that system run more quickly on a given server, according to Sean McCown of IDG news service.

McCown writes that "there's a reason why we say tuning a database is both an art and a science. It's because very few hard-and-fast rules exist that apply across the board. The problems you've solved on one system aren't issues on another, and vice versa. There's no right answer when it comes to tuning queries, but that doesn't mean you should give up."

According to McCown, ensuring that SQL Server only pulls the columns necessary for each query can save system resources, as can making sure that code is not sloppily duplicated and reused across multiple implementations. Becoming familiar with the correct use of temporary tables can also be helpful, he says.

Numerous experts say that SQL Server is one of many business software products that can be functional, if not efficient, when poorly programmed. Improving the level of expertise among the IT professionals assigned to those systems can create much more workable business technology environments.
