IT workers needed for healthcare industry transition

Information technology workers are expected to become even more vital for healthcare as the industry moves toward digital medical records, according to a Newsday report.

In order to ensure the move to digitize medical records takes place properly, doctors and hospitals must work closely with IT professionals. IT is critical for the healthcare industry because IT specialists have to help devise the systems that will improve care for patients and save hospitals money.

According to Kevin Dahill, president and chief executive of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council, providers are desperate for innovative ideas and urged IT professionals to help in this area.

"It's about what the information technology community can bring to support the change that is going on," Dahill told the Long Island chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals.

Another industry is hinging on IT professionals to provide assistance and defend the country’s cyber space. According to a report by the National Journal, experts estimate that the United States government lacks between 20,000 and 30,000 trained IT professionals for open cyber security positions.
