IT department staffs may experience modest growth in 2011, according to a recent report from market research firm Corporate Executive Board.

The group is forecasting IT spending to increase 3.3 percent next year, which will translate into more IT employees being hired as 60 percent of increased budgets will be spent on labor. Fifty-five percent of companies polled for the report said they will increase internal staff next year, while 23 percent plan to increase the number of contract staff they hire.

Developer jobs may be the most stable career opportunities next year along with application maintenance and networking, according to the Corporate Executive Board. Job areas that will experience the most growth include project management, strategic planning and enterprise architecture.

Next year will be the first time in three years that IT spending is expected to increase. Market research firm Gartner also recently predicted IT spending to grow in 2011. It has predicted global IT budgets will reach $2.5 trillion, a 3.1 percent increase over the $2.4 trillion companies are expected to spend in 2010.
