IT salaries, spending on training up this year and expected to grow

Survey results from a new Society for Information Management poll show IT salaries and spending on training have increased this year, and are expected to grow further in 2011.
The Society for Information Management questioned 172 chief information officers, chief technology officers and senior IT executives from 172 U.S. companies.
Results showed 83 percent of CIOs reported that IT staff salaries were the same or larger this year. The number was 81 percent in 2009. An astounding 91 percent said they expect salaries to remain the same or increase next year.
"In previous recessions, IT was the first place that companies asked to slice and dice, but you don't see that now," said Jerry Luftman, who has helped conduct the survey the past 10 years.
As for training, the new survey discovered CIOs will spend 3.9 percent of their IT budgets on training in 2011. That figure is up from 3.5 percent this year and 3.2 percent in 2009.
The strength of IT job market was evident earlier this year. A U.S. Department of Labor National Employment Report found the IT industry gained 8,800 jobs in April. Separate statistics predict growth to continue until 2018.
