IT program manager becoming significant

The federal information technology position IT program manager is becoming more significant in the field, a recent report by NextGov stated.
IT program managers are expected to be highly ranked and highly paid positions. Program managers monitor IT development initiatives, while also overseeing multiple teams working on several projects, said Alan Balutis, director of Cisco’s internet business solutions group.
Balutis was formerly part of a group of federal chief information officers and executives who helped shape the program manager positions for the current White House chief information officer Vivek Kundra. In his 25-point plan to reform the government’s federal IT management, Kundra highlighted program manager as a significant aspect of his reform.
"All of that would be rolled up under one program manager who would be in charge of the entire array of initiatives," Balutis said, and added the position would be "guiding the whole change effort and be the point of interface with the senior leadership."
Worldwide IT spending is expected to increase to $3.6 trillion in 2011, increasing more than 5 percent from 2010, according to a study by Gartner.
