IT professionals sought by booming healthcare IT industry

According to a study recently released by the University of California San Diego Extension School, healthcare information technology is the fastest-growing job market in the United States. The study cites several sources which point to both government initiatives and an industry-wide desire to make patient care more efficient.

As the technology becomes more important within the healthcare industry, the need to maintain it and make constant improvements is expected to increase the demand for qualified IT professionals. UCSD reports that in the coming years, systems integration specialists, consultants and other IT jobs will be sought by healthcare facilities.

"Jobs and needs in the healthcare information technology field are a critical component of plans for positive change in the healthcare industry," Mary Walshok, associate vice chancellor of public programs and dean at the UCSD Extension School, said.

Beyond the healthcare industry, available IT jobs are on the rise throughout the United States. Wanted Technologies recently reported that IT positions posted on the 1,000 job boards and websites it tracks were up 34 percent last month compared to April 2009. While the numbers have not returned to their peak in the spring of 2008, their growth in industries like healthcare have experts optimistic that they will continue to grow.
