IT professionals braced for minimal patch Tuesday

After an outsized load of updates and new code for its products in April, Microsoft's monthly helping of patches for May will be much smaller, according to Computer World's Gregg Keizer.
Although the company has publicly acknowledged the existence of several security flaws in its SharePoint software, Microsoft response communications group manager Jerry Bryant told Keizer that "we will not be releasing an update for [our recent Security Advisory for SharePoint] with the May bulletins," adding that the team was still working on a fix for these problems.
The company will, however, repair "critical" vulnerabilities in older versions of its flagship Windows operating system. The same vulnerability is present in Windows 7, but it is less easily exploitable, the company said.
Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle, told Keizer that "it's the predictable off month for Microsoft. That's all within the predictable pattern they've created."
Experienced IT professionals prepare for patch Tuesday well in advance, experts say, ensuring that their department's machines are ready to accept the fixes with a minimum of downtime.
