Careers in the information technology field account for slightly more than 25 percent of the best jobs in the United States, according to a recently released report from Money magazine and Payscale.com.

The 2010 Best Jobs in America list shows that 26 of the top 100 careers in the nation are in either IT or security.

Software engineers ranked ninth on the list with an annual salary of $144,000 and software architect occupies No. 14 on the list at $119,000. In terms of the most opportunity for growth, telecommunications network engineers ranked second, while software architects ranked fourth.

The publications compiled the list based on data from PayScale.com, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and research conducted by Money magazine. Careers were ranked based on salaries and opportunities for growth.

Several recent reports have forecasted growth across the IT jobs market in 2011, thanks mainly to increases in spending on IT. The Corporate Executive Board recently announced that IT budgets will return to pre-recession levels in 2011, with spending expected to increase for the first time in two years.
