IT departments increasingly tasked with complex data management

The results of a recently released study conducted by IDC show that IT professionals are more and more concerned with the management of the vast amounts of data that they have to deal with every day, and that expert knowledge of software that cuts down on that workload is critically important.

The IDC study, which was sponsored by IBM, says that "CIOs will continue to need to lower operating costs and manage the workforce, while responding to the real-time needs of their business, in 2010 and beyond. The database is an often over-looked component of the IT stack - and one with a key role to play in relieving pressures on the IT department."

The study also shows that IT departments are forced to spend much more time on maintenance than on producing new solutions for the departments that they support.

Microsoft products like SharePoint and SQL server are among the most commonly used data management tools at the enterprise level, experts say, meaning that SharePoint training and SQL server knowledge are important resume entries for any IT professional looking for a job in the current economy.
