High school students are being recruited for next IT wave

The Army, Air Force and Defense Department are looking for the next generation of information technologists.

A total of 50 local high school students visited the Pentagon for the fifth annual IT shadow day. The event was sponsored by a partnership of the Federal Chief Information Officers Council and Department of Defense.

The students were presented with literature and videos about the IT work that’s available within the Defense Department. They also listened to cyber security and social media briefings, toured the DoD Network Monitoring Instruction Center and learned how to apply for federal jobs.

"We're trying to get the high school students interested in information technology, so we can establish a pipeline of students and future employees for the Defense Department and the federal government," said director of CIO management services for the DoD chief information officer, Joyce France.

Not only is IT in great demand, but companies are also cutting fewer jobs. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, employers reported roughly 500,000 job cuts in 2010 compared to 2009, when 1.2 million were cut.
