Healthcare to open opportunities for IT professionals in Indiana

Upcoming developments in the healthcare sector are expected to provide at least 1,300 jobs for IT professionals in Indiana, according to a report from the Courier-Journal.
The move is a sign of national progress in healthcare's IT initiatives to upgrade all of the nation's providers to electronic medical records, sharing them through a national health information exchange network.
In Indiana, specifically, the estimates for potentially more than 1,300 healthcare IT jobs came from BioCrossroads, a private life-sciences industry advocate in the state. According to David Johnson, the organization's president and CEO, national upgrades in health information technology are reaching even rural areas these days.
"There's a whole host of things that are possible, once the information enables it and once you can capture the information, as we now do every single day, in as unlikely a place as Central Indiana," Johnson said, the news provider reports.
The state's developments in healthcare IT stem from previous work from the Regenstrief Institute at Indiana University, which is researching the impact of new information technology systems upon the healthcare industry.
The federal government has even intervened to create healthcare jobs for IT professionals, as major portions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 are devoted to fund healthcare providers who introduce new IT systems and hire additional IT professionals for added support.
