Following the announcement of a five-year, $500 million agreement with pharmaceutical giant Merck, HCL Americas has announced that it will create 100 new positions at its services-delivery center in Cary, North Carolina, according to InformationWeek's Global CIO Blog. While there will be available positions in several fields, a substantial portion will be IT jobs.

Before making the deal with HCL, Merck announced that it will eliminate 17,500 full-time positions worldwide. In order to handle the amount of work that will result from managing Merck's IT operations, HCL has to add to its IT staff. Merck and HCL have worked together in the past, and both sides enjoyed the results enough to expand the relationship with this deal.

"Merck has leveraged HCL's extensive expertise in life sciences and healthcare to streamline operational efficiencies and consolidate its IT portfolio," Richard Branton, vice president of application services for Merck, told the news provider. Branton added that the deal will allow Merck to "leverage global delivery services to meet our business imperatives."

HCL's primary offices are in India, and the company views the deal with Merck as a terrific opportunity to expand its operations in the United States, according to India Journal.
