Growth of cloud computing changing IT jobs

The fear of many IT professionals is that cloud computing will reduce the number of opportunities available as companies outsource positions to cloud vendors. However, according to IT Business Edge, keeping IT staff informed as decisions are made about the cloud will allow companies to keep their staff happy and learn of new ways to use their employees.
In one case, Manesh Patel, chief information officer of Sanmina-SCI, found that switching to a cloud-based email service resulted in no job losses. It did, however, give IT workers more time to work on other tasks within the organization that resulted in better overall performance and efficiency. Since a substantial portion of what IT workers do is maintenance, eliminating the need for support of an email server allows those workers more time to focus elsewhere.
Patel also found that many of the company's IT professionals were excited to work with cloud computing for the first time since it enabled them to learn new skills while retaining their employment.
Gartner recently reported that 95 percent of companies that use SaaS applications will continue or expand their investment in 2010. Companies with IT professionals willing to learn new technologies will likely experience the best results from these business-critical applications.
