Expert: Timing is critical when pondering department-wide switch to new software
3/25/2010 1:19 PM
IT professionals contemplating a switch to new versions of Microsoft's Visual Studio and .NET framework must consider their timing when making such a decision, according to Info World's Martin Heller.
Heller writes that "one of our developers has been tracking the Visual Studio 2010 betas and release candidate, successfully compiling and linking C++ modules, one at a time. His short summary: 'Most of the hard work was done when we went from Visual C++ 6 to Visual Studio 2005, and some more when we went to Visual Studio 2008.'"
Microsoft is planning a number of new releases in the business software sector in the coming year, including the latest version of its flagship Office productivity suite and the associated SharePoint program.
Depending on the level of expertise and knowledge available to a given IT department, a switch to more modern versions of enterprise software could take days or months, experts say. Extensive .NET framework training could be necessary if a company does not have sufficiently experienced IT professionals already in place.
