Expert: Companies are searching for IT skills

While many experts forecast modest growth for the IT jobs market this year, that doesn't mean job seekers with IT skills should worry about landing a position, according to Forrester Research chief operating officer Charles Rutstein.
In a recent interview with the Boston Globe, Rutstein said companies will look for prospective employees with technology skills, perhaps not always to fill IT employee positions. Candidates with such IT skills will be in high demand as companies look to fill certain other organizational needs, Rutstein said.
"It means that there’s a new role for people who can work within a business and who understand technology better than the average bear," he said.
Using his company as an example, Rutstein said overall hiring will be based on whether or not a candidate can boost a business' productivity. Since technology skills have been proven to meet that goal, candidates trained in IT will face the best prospects.
The hiring of technology professionals was reflected in a recent report from Computer Economics. The study predicted that companies will increase IT hires as technology spending grows this year. Thirteen percent of respondents said they will focus spending on the size of their IT staff.
