Efforts being made to recruit women into IT careers

The National Center for Women & Information Technology is doing its part to get women interested in technology and pursue careers in IT.

With its NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing, the center is making an effort to recruit women to an industry that has remained strong during the recession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, technology jobs rank among the top 10 fastest growing occupations and have some of the highest entry level salaries of any bachelor's degree.

"Encouraging young women's interest in technology careers is critical. Our workforce needs their creativity and their innovation," said Lucy Sanders, CEO and co-founder of NCWIT.

The Center's award is given to high school women who display interest in information technology and computing, leadership ability and plans to pursue a secondary education.

Recruiting women to the information technology field may be just what the industry needs. Though labor statistics predict job growth over the next eight years, there has been a lack of workers taking up IT careers recently, according to an IT expert. Injecting more women into the workforce may ward off a skills shortage in the future.
