DBAs use SQL Server more than any other platform

Microsoft's SQL Server is the database platform utilized most by database administrators, according to the results of a recent Database Trends Survey.
Results show SQL Server is used by 62 percent of respondents, surpassing Oracle's 60 percent and Sybase's 35 percent.
Other study findings show 72 percent of DBAs manage at least two types of database platforms. While 20 percent said they manage just one platform, 33 percent said they manage two, 25 percent said three, 8 percent said four and 14 percent said they manage five or more.
"Multiplatform database management is becoming more commonplace, but that doesn't mean it's getting less complicated," said Scott Walz, senior director of product management for Embarcadero.
An increased number of mergers and acquisitions the past few years could be feeding the need for multi-platform database management, according to the study. Forty-three percent of respondents said their company has been through a merger or acquisition in the past five years, and 18 percent reported having to work with a new database platform as a result.
