Could Silverlight support be headed to Macs?

Microsoft's Silverlight online media framework could show up on Apple devices before long, according to a report from British tech news website The Register.

The site reports that Microsoft lead product manager Brian Goldfarb, "fresh from Microsoft's recent Mix 2010 conference where the HTML 5 news was announced, told The Reg that Microsoft is 'looking at other ways to extend Silverlight to other platforms.' Microsoft is looking at features that are specific to those particular platforms and that could mean support in Silverlight for AppleScript or shell extensions."

This could mean that IT professionals experienced in working with Silverlight could see many more job opportunities on the horizon, as their potential group of employers expands greatly, experts say.

Additionally, the move could be a sign that Microsoft is relaxing its hold over proprietary technologies that it would, in the past, have guarded jealously. An analysis at Network World by Amy Vernon says that the company has recently made overtures to the open-source community, a group in which Microsoft has never been regarded particularly highly.
