Computerworld: IT certifications no longer optional

IT professionals considering a change in employer or those looking for a promotion should pursue certifications in popular software to improve their resumes, according to Computerworld. For employees with substantial experience within a certain company it may not necessary, but recent college graduates or those looking for an IT position within a corporation should consider certification.

Most companies now rely on their IT staff to ensure smooth operation and need employees capable of quickly identifying and fixing problems. Software manufacturers took notice of the trend and expanded the certification programs they offer; Computerworld reports that Microsoft offered five certifications in 2005 and now lists 46 specializations IT professionals can receive.

Furthermore, companies have greatly reduced training budgets, so, for example, an organization in need of a SharePoint developer wants someone that can already use the application without extensive instruction.

Microsoft released its 2010 editions of Office and SharePoint earlier this year. With companies increasing IT budgets, those looking to expand may seek applicants with in-depth knowledge of these business-critical applications. Gaining certification with either will help people in the market for IT jobs distinguish themselves.
