Companies to increase IT staffs as spending increases

Increasing the size of their IT staff will be a focus for companies this year as IT spending begins to grow, according to the Outlook for IT Spending and Staffing in 2011 report by Computer Economics.

According to the survey of 136 North American companies, IT spending is set to increase 2 percent this year. While modest, it will be the first time since 2008 that companies will increase IT spending.

Adding to their IT staff will be among the focus of this increase in spending, the report found. Thirteen percent of respondents said they will focus spending on the size of their IT staff. Another positive is that few organizations will cut IT work hours. In fact, 48.5 percent of respondents said they will increase hours, while just 1.5 percent will decrease hours.

While IT management will still be tasked with doing more with fewer resources, companies have given IT the green light to embark on more projects and take more risks, according to the report.

In the fall, Gartner predicted global IT spending would reach $2.5 trillion this year, an increase of 3.1 percent. Last year, Gartner reported IT spending would reach $2.4 trillion, an increase of 2.4 percent over 2009.
