Companies expect to spend more on business intelligence in coming years

The results of a new survey conducted by CIO magazine suggest there may be a greater need for properly trained business intelligence professionals in the near future as more companies are investing in BI initiatives.

The survey polled 335 IT professionals whose companies utilize business intelligence technologies and found 57 percent plan to increase BI spending in the coming years. Thirty-nine percent anticipate spending to remain flat and just 4 percent said their company will spend less on BI in the next year.

"As far as technology priorities go, cloud computing is certainly in the top five. And close on the list is the topic of analytics and business intelligence," according to an InfoWorld report on the study.

The CIO magazine survey also found the amount of companies using hosted BI services to grow from 7 percent this year to 23 percent within the next one to three years.

Earlier this year, the Microsoft business intelligence suite PowerPivot was named one of the 10 best solutions on the market by Datamation. By leveraging technology already found in many companies and comfortable to most workers, Microsoft hopes to capture a large share of the BI market, according to Datamation.
