College degree still vital for IT workers

Despite some of the country’s largest and most successful companies being founded by people without college degrees - Facebook, Microsoft and Apple - those with college degrees still have the edge in the field of information technology.
A recent article by MSNBC’s Chris Farrell highlights the current IT landscape and how college degrees set potential workers apart from those without degrees.
Certain IT companies are expanding, especially Google, Groupon and Facebook, and are looking to fill open positions with skilled workers who are educated. According to the article, 86 percent of IT workers currently have a college degree.
“As the economy continues to expand and the Great American Job Machine grinds into gear, the beneficiaries will have more than a high school certificate. Education doesn't always pay,” wrote Farrell. “It isn't a panacea. But it's still the ticket that creates the opportunity for a middle-class job and career.”
In an effort to promote more students pursuing a career in IT, the Pentagon hosted 50 high school students last month, showing them presentations and providing information regarding which technology was offered in each department.
