A new survey revealed many IT developers and specialists believe business analytics will be among the hottest areas in terms of IT job growth and opportunities in 2011.

Respondents to the technology industry trends survey ranked business analytics along with the cloud, mobility, social media and industry-specific technologies in terms of best career opportunities.

"These survey results clearly demonstrate that IT professionals see a combination of disruptive technologies and industry-specific skills as key to driving near-term business growth," said an executive with the company that conducted the survey.

But IT training in these areas will be crucial. Sixty percent of respondents admit to lacking the industry knowledge needed to remain competitive. Yet 90 percent believe it is important to possess such industry-specific skills for their jobs.

More job opportunities could also result from increases in global IT spending, according to Gartner. A report from the market research firm predicts global IT spending will reach $2.5 trillion next year - an increase of 3.1 percent. This year, IT spending will reach $2.4 trillion, an increase of 2.4 percent.
