Board members look to IT for improvements

According to a survey by the Oliver Wyman Group and the National Association of Corporate Directors, 99 percent of those surveyed said information technology will affect their organizations within the next five years.

The report contains information from 204 board members, which 51 percent said they do not have enough information or communication to perform their duties effectively. The survey also found that 36 percent expect to improve IT efficiency at their companies within the next five years, while 30 percent expect IT to provide a competitive advantage.

“It used to be clear which firms were technology businesses,” said the report. “But today, every business is a technology business. No matter what industry, companies rely on technology to squeeze costs, streamline processes, leapfrog competitors and, where possible, transform whole industries.”

Smaller businesses are also looking at IT to help set their companies apart from larger corporations. According to the InformationWeek Outlook 2011, which surveyed 260 professionals at companies with 1,000 employees or fewer, one-third of small- and medium-sized businesses expect to increase their IT budget during 2011.
