Analyst: Microsoft betting big on .NET framework

Microsoft appears to believe that its .NET framework can be a sufficiently robust application platform to cope with the future demands of Silverlight-based mobile apps, according to David Worthington of Software Development Times.

Worthington says that Microsoft officials speaking at the MIX 2010 conference in Las Vegas on Monday talked up the prospects for Silverlight apps running on its new Windows Phone 7 OS. "We asked ourselves, 'What do we need to do to compete in this vastly changed [mobile] landscape? What we did was determine to focus on end-user experiences," said Microsoft senior product manager Larry Lieberman.

Lieberman went on to tell Worthington that, although the new framework will not be a "write once/run everywhere" panacea for mobile device programming, he still expects that the system will provide a higher degree of flexibility and ease of use, which will make app development much faster than previously possible.

IT professionals with extensive training in .NET framework may well be in high demand going forward, thanks to the direction Microsoft has taken its programming systems.
